Modeling the Milky-Way Satellite galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
We revisit the Milky Way satellite problem using a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and compare the predicted luminosity function to recent result from the SDSS. With cosmic photoionization, the luminosity function can be brought into broad agreement with the data between −15 < MV < −2. This improvement over previous semi-analytical model results (e.g., Benson et al. 2002) is from our adoption of improved models for galaxy merger history and galaxy merging time-scales. The very faint satellites (Mv > −5) formed in halos with virial temperature over 10K ( mass around 109M⊙ before accretion), but their baryon content are strongly suppressed by photoionization. We model the mass evolution of the subhalos, and compare the predicted mass-to-light ratio with the data. We find that the measured total mass inside the luminous radii of satellites are about 5% of their present total dark matter mass.

Are Great Disks Defined by Satellite Galaxies in Milky-Way Type Halos Rare in ΛCDM?
We study the spatial distribution of satellite galaxies by assuming that they follow the dark matter distribution. This assumption is supported by semi-analytical studies based on high-resolution numerical simulations. We find that for a Milky-Way type halo, if only a dozen satellite galaxies are observed, then they can lie on a “great” disk with an rms height of about 40 kpc. The normal to the...
متن کاملWay dwarf satellites enter the halo as a group ?
The dwarf satellite galaxies in the Local Group are generally considered to be hosted in dark matter subhalos that survived the disruptive processes during infall onto their host halos. It has recently been argued that if the majority of satellites entered the Milky Way halo in a group rather than individually, this could explain the spatial and dynamical peculiarities of its satellite distribu...
متن کاملThe orbital poles of Milky Way satellite galaxies: a rotationally supported disc-of-satellites
Available proper motion measurements of Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies are used to calculate their orbital poles and projected uncertainties. These are compared to a set of recent cold dark-matter (CDM) simulations, tailored specifically to solve the MW satellite problem. We show that the CDM satellite orbital poles are fully consistent with being drawn from a random distribution, while the ...
متن کاملGalaxies on Sub-Galactic Scales
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has been immensely successful in detecting new Milky Way satellite galaxies over the past seven years. It was instrumental in finding examples of the least luminous galaxies we know in the Universe, uncovering apparent inconsistencies between cold dark matter theory and dwarf galaxy properties, providing first evidence for a possible lower mass limit for dark matter...
متن کاملThe Milky Way Dark Halo and the Lmc Disk
Stars and their kinematics provide one of the tools available for studies of the shapes of galaxies and their halos. In this review I focus on two specific applications: the shape of the Milky Way dark halo and the shape of the LMC disk. The former is constrained by a variety of observations, but an accurate determination of the axial ratio qDH remains elusive. A very flattened Milky Way dark h...
متن کاملSdss Survey for Resolved Milky Way Satellite Galaxies Ii: High-velocity Clouds in the Early Data Release
In this paper, we limit the stellar content of 13 high-velocity clouds (HVCs; including 1 compact HVC) using the detection limits of a new survey for resolved Milky Way satellite galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (EDR). Our analysis is sensitive to stellar associations within the virial radius of the Milky Way that are up to 50× fainter than the faintest known Milky Wa...
